Abstract :The classifi cation and reaction mechanism of phosphorus fl ame retardants were reviewed,and the application progress of phosphorus fl ame retardants in several kinds of plastics such as polypropylene,polystyrene,polyurethane and nylon was described.    Flame retardants as a kind of plastics processing AIDS, and other plastic additives (plasticizer, filler, colouring agent, antistatic agent, etc.), application method, through to the improvement of the material in the processing, to plastic people use demand.With the increasing demand of plastic products, the heat resistance and inflammability of plastic products have become the research hotspot at home and abroad.The combustion conditions of plastics are related to the temperature of the environment, the composition of plastics and the concentration of oxygen in the air.However in the plastic combustion and thermal decomposition process is accompanied by a series of very complex physical and chemical reaction, is often the production of smoke and toxic gases, the consequences poses a serious threat to people health and property safety.

The international limit oxygen index (LOI) and UL 94 grades are used to determine the flame retardant performance of flame retardants in plastics.Flame retardant is a kind of additive that improves the combustion conditions of polymer materials by inhibiting combustion.The flame retardant can absorb the heat released during the burning of polymer materials, so that the ambient temperature of the burning polymer does not increase rapidly.After combustion, the flame retardant forms a dense protective layer on the surface of the polymer substrate to prevent further combustion.Phosphorus flame retardant is one kind of high efficiency, stable and widely used flame retardant.

Conclusion

With the development of science and technology, plastics have become an indispensable consumable product in today's world.Phosphorus-containing flame retardant has the advantages of environmental protection, high efficiency, and shall not affect the original plastic performance, at the same time to avoid the fire safety problems in the process of application in plastic, the application of phosphorus-containing flame retardant effect will become one of the goals of the future in the field of plastic flame retardant.

It can be determined that phosphorus flame retardants have a good application prospect and direction in plastics, including :

(1) application of halogen-free flame retardant plastics;

(2) ultra-fine nano flame retardant;

(3) reactive phosphorus flame retardant;

(4) synergistic flame retardant effect of phosphorus and other elements;

(5) mixed use of organic/inorganic flame retardants;

(6) flame retardants with multiple processing functions such as flame retardant, capacity enhancement and plasticizing.
